A dog’s smile can warm your heart, but maintaining those pearly whites is crucial for their overall health and well-being. Neglecting your furry friend’s dental hygiene can lead to expensive tooth extractions, which can easily cost between $500 and $1,000. In this article, we’ll delve into the importance of dog dental care and share tips to keep your canine companion’s teeth in top shape, both for their health and your wallet.

The Significance of Dog Dental Care

Just like humans, dogs can suffer from a range of dental problems if their oral health is ignored. Dental issues can lead to pain, discomfort, bad breath, and, in severe cases, the need for costly tooth extractions. Here are some common dental problems in dogs:

Plaque and Tartar Buildup

If left untreated, plaque and tartar can accumulate on your dog’s teeth, leading to gum inflammation and tooth decay.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is an early stage of gum disease. It can cause red, swollen gums and discomfort for your dog.

Periodontal Disease

This is an advanced stage of gum disease that can lead to tooth loss, infection, and severe pain.

Preventing Dental Problems

The good news is that you can take several steps to prevent dental issues in your dog and avoid costly tooth extractions. Here’s how:

Regular Brushing

Just like us, dogs benefit from regular teeth brushing. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush and dog-specific toothpaste to clean their teeth. Start slowly, and make it a positive experience for your dog.

Dental Chews and Toys

Certain dog chews and toys are designed to help clean your dog’s teeth as they chew. Look for products that are approved by veterinary associations.

Dental Diets

Special dental diets are formulated to help reduce plaque and tartar buildup. Consult your vet for recommendations.

Professional Cleanings

Schedule regular dental check-ups with your veterinarian. They may recommend professional cleanings under anesthesia to address any existing dental problems.

Monitor Your Dog’s Dental Health

Regularly check your dog’s mouth for signs of dental issues, including bad breath, swollen gums, and loose or discoulored teeth. Early detection can prevent costly treatments.

Understanding the Cost of Tooth Extractions

If dental problems progress and tooth extractions become necessary, the costs can quickly add up. Factors that influence the cost include the number of teeth to be extracted, the complexity of the procedure, anesthesia, and post-operative care. To avoid these expenses, prioritize preventive care. You can easily run $500-$1,000 for a single tooth extraction on a dog.

How Pet Shield Can Help

All Pet Shield Insurance policies offer annual coverage for preventative dental care. Depending on the coverage, your pet could get between $200-$600 annually in dental care coverage. This can help cover the cost of routine cleanings that can prevent larger issues down the line.

Step 3: Consider Alternate Options

Senior Dogs

Adopting senior pets can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience for pet owners. Senior pets often have a harder time finding homes than younger ones, but they can offer just as much love and companionship. Additionally, older pets tend to be calmer, better trained, and less destructive than their younger counterparts. While senior pets may have age-related health issues, these can often be managed with proper care and medication, and many senior pets go on to live happy and healthy lives in their new homes. Adopting a senior pet can be a way to give a deserving animal a comfortable and loving home for their golden years, while also gaining a loyal companion who is often already trained and well-behaved.

They are a great option for first time dog owners.

Mixed Breed Dogs

Adopting a mixed breed dog can be a great choice for potential pet owners. Mixed breeds often combine the traits of their different breeds, resulting in unique and sometimes unexpected personality traits and physical features. Additionally, mixed breeds tend to be less prone to genetic health issues than purebred dogs. Adopting a mixed breed dog can also be an excellent way to save a life, as many mixed breed dogs end up in shelters waiting for their forever homes.

Temporary Fostering

Temporarily fostering dogs can be a wonderful way for pet lovers to provide a safe and loving home to dogs in need. Fostering dogs can help alleviate overcrowding in shelters and rescue organizations, while also providing dogs with a chance to socialize and receive one-on-one attention. Fostering is also an excellent option for people who want to enjoy the benefits of pet ownership without making a long-term commitment. Additionally, fostering can provide an opportunity to see if a particular dog is a good fit for a permanent home. Fostering can be a rewarding experience for both the foster parent and the dog, and it’s a great way to make a positive difference in the lives of animals in need.

Step 4: Decision time

Choosing the right dog breed is a crucial decision for any potential pet owner. It is essential to take time to research and consider different factors such as the dog’s size, energy level, and temperament, as well as the owner’s lifestyle and living situation. Each breed has unique characteristics that can make them well-suited or ill-suited for a particular owner, so it’s crucial to consider these factors when selecting a breed.

At the end of the day, it’s up to you to make the right decision given your lifestyle, living situation, and what characteristics you want in a dog.

Conclusions

Choosing the right dog breed is an important decision that requires careful consideration of the individual’s lifestyle, personality, and preferences. With so many different breeds to choose from, it can be overwhelming to find the perfect match, but taking the time to do research and understand the different breeds’ characteristics can help make the process easier. Remember to take into account the breed’s size, energy level, and temperament, as well as the owner’s living situation and activity level.

No matter which breed is chosen, providing a loving and nurturing home is essential to raising a happy and healthy pet. Whether adopting a puppy or an older dog, there are many resources available to help new pet owners navigate the responsibilities of pet ownership. With the right preparation, care, and attention, the bond between a dog and its owner can be a lifelong and fulfilling relationship.

When a your pet passes away, the feeling can be devastating. You’ve lost an important member of your family and you want to honour the great bond, memories, and time you spent with one another. It is important to note that everyone processes grief differently and what the best way for you to process your grief might be different than someone else.

Here are 9 options you can consider to honour your late pet:

1. Create a Memorial

This can be as simple as placing a photo of your pet in a special place or as elaborate as creating a dedicated memorial garden. Some people like to take there pets favorite toy or an item that was significant to them to a place that was special to both of you.

2. Donate to an Animal Charity of Rescue Group

You can make a donation in memory of your pet to an organization that helps animals in need. If your pet was adopted from a shelter, making a donation to that shelter is a nice way to remember them. Your donation can help get a pet in need into a loving home.

3. Create an Art Piece

If you have a bit of an artistic flair, you can make an art piece that reminds you of them. It could be a painting, sculpture, or another display of them. It doesn’t necessarily have to be an art piece of them. If your pet was named Daisy, a painting of a daisy flower can be a nice way to remember them.

4. Plant a Tree

Planting a tree or another plant can be a lovely way to memorialize your pet. Some folks like to plant a tree on their pets favorite walking path or near somewhere of significance.

5. Keep a Journal

Journaling can be a great outlet to express your feelings. You can write about your memories and the good times you shared together.

6. Share Their Story

Journaling is a nice private way to honour your pet after they pass. Sometimes, sharing your story and your feelings can be beneficial in handling grief.

7. Volunteer

Volunteering with pets at a local shelter or not for profit can be beneficial. It can also be a nice way to fill the metaphorical void that you have.

8. Create a Book of Memories

Creating a memory book is a nice way to memorialize your pet after they pass. It gives you a way to look back and appreciate all of the good times you had together with photos, mementos, and keepsakes.

9. Hold a Ceremony

You can hold a ceremony or memorial service for your pet. It could be as formal as spreading their ashes with your loved ones or as informal as going out for dinner with the rest of your family in their honour. It is up to you on what you need to do remember them best.

Conclusion

Clearly, losing a pet can be a devastating experience. When you’re ready and you should find a way to honour them that means the most to you. Honouring a pet that has passed can help cope with the grief and sadness that comes with it.

More Than 50% of Canadian Homes at Least 1 Plant and 1 Pet

With so many homes containing houseplants, cats, and/or dogs, it is paramount to make sure that they are safe. Some mischievous pets like to have a little nibble on your common houseplants. It then begs the question:

Are These Common Houseplants Safe for My Cat or Dog?

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera

Cats: Highly toxic, even in small quantities. Keep away from cats. The active compound that makes aloe toxic to cats is in very high quantities within the aloe vera plant.

Dogs: Mildly toxic. Safe for skin application, but whole leaves should not be ingested.

Monstera Deliciosa

Cats: Highly toxic, even in small quantities.

Dogs: Highly toxic, even in small quantities.

* While the monstera plant is toxic to cats and dogs, it is unlikely that your pets will attempt to ingest the leaves. To deter the occasional curious pet, spraying the leaves with a vinegar water mixture to deter sampling.

Snake Plant

Cats: Mildly toxic. Similar chemical compounds to that of the aloe plant, however the concentration is much lower in the snake plant.

Dogs: Poisonous. Can cause abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and depression.

Spider Plant

Cats: Non toxic. Despite not being toxic, spider plants are said to have mild hallucinogenic effects on cats. Spider plants are often used by cat owners to dissuade them eating their other plants. Warning that cats may be particularly fond of eating your spider plant.

Dogs: Non toxic. Most dogs take little or no interest in spider plants.

Eucalyptus

Cats: Highly toxic, even in small quantities. Keep away from cats.

Dogs: Highly toxic, even in small quantities. Keep away from dogs.

*Many pet and home owners use eucalyptus oil in lotions or diffusers. These are also incredibly toxic to dogs and cats and should be avoided in the home.

Birds of Paradise

Cats: Highly toxic, even in small quantities.

Dogs: Highly toxic, even in small quantities.

Humans: Highly toxic, do not ingest! This is a warning not only to plant and pet parents, but also the parents of actual human children. Birds of paradise are beautiful, but can cause serious symptoms if ingested by humans.

Jade Plant

Cats: Highly toxic, even in small quantities.

Dogs: Highly toxic, even in small quantities.

*Being a succulent, jade plant leaves hold their moisture quite well. This means that even if a leaf appears to be dead and fallen, it can still hold its toxic properties.

Cacti

Cats: While they are not toxic to cats, the obvious hazard of the sharp spines, thorns, or prickles can make them unsafe for your cat to be around.

Dogs: While they are not toxic to dogs, the obvious hazard of the sharp spines, thorns, or prickles can make them unsafe for your dog. Keep them out of reach of curious pups and wagging tales.

Boston Ferns

Cats: Perfectly safe for cats. Boston ferns make excellent hanging baskets and are easy to keep out of the reach of cats.

Dogs: Perfectly safe for dogs.

Pothos

Cats: Toxic. Pothos plants are a very common houseplant that is often a beloved snack by cats. Keep your cats clear of pothos!

Dogs: Toxic. Pothos plants can have side effects as severe as liver failure.

Majesty Palm

Cats: Perfectly safe for cats. The majesty palm is widely considered one of the safest large plants to keep in the home when you have pets.

Dogs: Perfectly safe for dogs. The risk of an overenthusiastic tail knocking over the pot is your biggest concern here.

Croton

Cats: Toxic. This plant is commonly know for being quite terrible tasting to cats, the concern of ingestion is still there, but is lower than other toxic plants.

Dogs: Toxic. This plant is toxic and may cause skin irritation to your dog if there is skin contact made.

Conclusion

Many houseplants can be toxic or varying degree’s of poisonous. It is paramount that as a plant and pet parent that you make sure your plant babies and fur babies are safe to have in close proximity. The last thing you want is to have to take your pet to the emergency vet clinic and shill out hundreds, or even thousands of dollars.

Some food for thought, Pet Shield pet insurance can save you big in the event you need to go to the emergency vet. With plans as low $40/month for dogs and $30/month for cats, there is usually a plan that can work for you. Save yourself the heartache and headache of an uninsured emergency pet visit and get yourself a quote today.

What is Holistic Pet Treatment and How can it Help My Pet?

Holistic Pet Day

August 30 is Holistic Pet Day! In honour of the day, we have partnered with Armour Insurance to let you know a little bit about holistic pet treatments.

What is a Holistic Pet Treatment?

Holistic pet treatments and alternative pet treatments are usually considered to be interchangeable language. What makes a treatment alternative or holistic? Holistic treatments are considered anything outside of the standard veterinary visit of medication, procedures, exams, and/or surgery.

What Kind of Things are Considered Holistic/Alternative Pet Treatments?

  • Massages
  • Chiropractic
  • Acupuncture
  • Acupressure
  • Aromatherapy
  • Etc.

Many are familiar with some form of alternative treatment for humans and may have even partaken in one themselves. However, most would not be as familiar with the same treatments being available for their pets. As strange as it might sound, there most certainly is massage therapists and chiropractors for pets. In order to get a better understanding of each treatment, here is a brief overview of each treatment.

Pet Massages

Just like human massages, pet massages manipulates the soft and connective tissues of the body. Massages for pets can help them improve blood flow and help to heal sprains or strains in your pet. Pet massage can also help to ease anxiety and/or stress. In order to make sure that your pet is being massaged properly, it is recommended that you take them to a trained and licensed veterinary office so that your pet receives the maximum benefit and avoids any possible strain, pain, or discomfort.

Pet Chiropractic

While chiropractic is often thought of as cracking joints and bones like you’re stomping on a sack full of raw pasta, this is not the primary function of chiropractic treatments. Chiropractic treatments are meant to manipulate the spine, joints, and muscles of your pet to alleviate any problems. Veterinary chiropractic is meant to be a gentle treatment to help with your pet’s joint, muscular, and/or skeletal pain. This too should be performed by a trained and licensed veterinary office.

Pet Acupuncture

If you’re someone who is afraid of needles, obviously acupuncture is not an ideal choice for you. That being said, pet acupuncture is has been growing in popularity in recent years. Note that acupuncture needles are not the typical needles you use for drawing blood or for sewing. Acupuncture needles are incredibly small and fine. The needles are meant to be placed in very specific locations in the body and must be done by a trained veterinary office in order to ensure the correct equipment is used, and needles are placed appropriately. Needles are inserted in key areas of blood vessels and nerves commonly referred to as acupuncture points. This treatment can help reduce inflammation, reduce pain, reduce anxiety, and improve blood circulation.

Pet Acupressure

Acupressure is sort of a combination of massage and acupuncture. Using the same points as acupuncture, acupressure simply uses the hand to apply the appropriate amount of pressure to the same points. This is a less invasive option for pets.

Pet Aromatherapy

Just like aromatherapy for humans, pet aromatherapy uses a variety of scents to help relax your pet. This treatment is not for treating physical pain, but rather it is for calming anxious or stressed pets. Aromatherapy can be incredibly helpful for treating anxiety in pets, but this should be completed by a licensed veterinarian. Many aromatherapies designed for humans can be toxic to cats and dogs, this is why it should be done by a professional to avoid any complications.

What Can Pet Shield Do For You?

If you have a cat or dog, pet insurance can save you massive vet bills, headaches, and heartache. But that’s primarily what pet insurance is known for, the expensive middle of the night emergency vet visit. Obviously this is very much a stressful and difficult situation to be in, but pet insurance is for more than just emergencies. Pet Shield pet insurance certainly does cover emergency vet visits; however, it also covers (for the lack of a better term) the maintenance costs of your pets.

Pet Shield insurance has coverage for exam fees, parasite prevention, dental cleaning, and alternative/holistic treatments for your pets. Provided your pet does not have a pre-existing condition and your treatment is being performed by a licensed and trained veterinary office, Pet Shield Insurance will cover up to 80% of your pets maintenance costs. While most pet insurance policies have very little or no coverage for alternative/holistic treatments, Pet Shield plans have coverage for many different types of treatment.

If you’re a part of the 73% of Canadian households that have a pet, chances are you have had to deal with your furry friend not feeling their best. Specifically, their digestion. I’m sure most of us have been there at some point or another.

You’re on your morning walk with the dog and there is something that just isn’t right after you pull out that bag. The same thing goes for those cat owners; scooping out that litter box, and something is not the way it should be.

Sometimes you get the opposite problem. You take your dog out for their morning walk aaand nothing. You get a little concerned, but you’ve got to get to work. You take off for work knowing that they have not yet done their business. Once you get home from work you make sure to take them out first thing, but again, the same nothingness. You throw your hands in the air and all you can think is “for goodness’ sake! Just poop already!”

At this point you might be starting to worry. You’re thinking about taking your fur baby to the vet to get them looked at. Before you head down to the veterinarian, take a trip to your local grocery store. Most Canadian grocery stores have canned pumpkin for less than $10.

Pumpkin is an excellent source of fiber for dogs and cats with the added benefit of being chocked full of vitamin A. Not only can pumpkin help relieve constipation in your cat or dog, but it can also help soften hard stool and make them more regular.

How much pumpkin can I feed my pet?

  • Overconsumption of pumpkin can give your pet diarrhea, which would not help the situation
  • For dogs, the general rule is 1-4 tablespoons of pumpkin per meal (depending on the size of your dog)
  • For cats it ranges from ½-1 teaspoon per day (adjust the amounts by the size of your cat)

What kind of pumpkin do I use for my pet?

100% canned pumpkin. Do not get a flavoured pumpkin puree as it could exacerbate existing problems with your pet’s digestive process. Most grocery stores will carry E.D. Smith Pure Pumpkin in a can. This pumpkin has the advantage of being freezable. If in an airtight container, E.D Smith can last for up to 3 months in the freezer.

Pumpkin Picky Eaters

Many canines and felines will happily eat a pumpkin puree poured right onto their kibble. We are not oblivious to the fact that many pets can be picky eaters and refuse to eat pumpkin. If you’re in a predicament where your pet is having digestion issues and want to try pumpkin out, here are some ways that you can prepare the pumpkin to make it a little more appetizing.

How to disguise pumpkin for your pet

Yogurt and pumpkin combination
  • Mix with canned pumpkin with no/low sugar vanilla yogurt
  • Dogs: 1 scoop of yogurt to 1 scoop of pumpkin
  • Cats: 5 scoops of yogurt to 1 scoop of pumpkin
Wet food pumpkin combination
  • Mix appropriate amount pumpkin into a serving of wet food
  • Wet food helps conceal the colour, smell, and flavour of pumpkin
Freezing your mixture
  • Using a spare ice cube tray, freeze the pumpkin puree that was mixed together
  • Serve over kibble or in a bowl by itself
  • Stores for up to 3 months frozen (airtight container)

Conclusion

If your pet has some digestion discomfort or is suffering from constipation, pumpkin can be an excellent addition to their diet in the right quantities. Be sure to use unflavoured canned pumpkin to not make the issue work. For a final tip, you don’t need to purchase your pumpkin from the pet store at a large markup, the grocery store pumpkin will usually be cheaper and more accessible.

*Note that if your pet has not had a bowel movement in two days and pumpkin is not helping, they should be taken to the vet. To help share the cost of veterinary expenses, why not get a quote on pet insurance HERE.

I brush my teeth daily... what about my dog's?

This may be a surprising fact! To prevent periodontal disease, which affects 80% of dogs, it’s ideal for pet owners to brush their pet’s teeth as often as they would their own: 1-2 times per day. Dental disease is the most common clinical condition in pets, and it is totally preventable. For most dogs, once brushing becomes part of their daily routine, they will reach a point where it’s expected, and even enjoyed.

To learn the steps to follow for teaching your dog to accept tooth brushing, as well as additional tips, visit VCA Animal Hospital’s webpage regarding brushing your dog’s teeth.

Unlike other pet insurance companies, Pet Shield’s coverages include exam fees, taxes, and comprehensive dental coverage. If your pet needs any kind of dental work, as well as related procedures: full incubation, anesthetic, pain medication, X-RAYS, etc., Pet Shield has them covered! Winter is the harshest season in Canada, and each year, we all take steps to prepare for it. That leaves some of us wondering how to keep our pets warm in the winter, especially when taking them outside. We at Pet Shield have chosen our favourite tips for keeping your pet warm and healthy during the winter!

Limit Time Outside

No dog is meant to spend huge amounts of time outside in the winter, and thick coats don’t protect all body parts. Ears, paws, and noses are left exposed. Lowering your pet’s exposure to harsh winter conditions is very important for their health. Don’t leave dogs outside unattended for any length of time on cold days. You should really only take them outside in conditions like that if they’re going to be active and exercise. Even then, you should shorten your time spent outside.

Don’t Leave Them in the Car

Just like with hot weather, leaving a dog in the car for extended hours is not a good idea in the cold. During the winter months, cars can get cold fast when left outside. For your pet’s safety and comfort, try to avoid situations where you have to leave them in a cold car.

Wipe Their Paws

When you take your pet for walks, there’s more than snow on the ground to be worried about. Dirt, salt, and other toxic chemicals like antifreeze can build up on their feet. Licking them to clean them off could cause your pet to ingest something toxic, especially antifreeze. Wipe your pet’s paws with a towel once you arrive home, and monitor their feet for any injuries caused by ice. You can also trim the hair between their toes to prevent an ice buildup.

Shelter Outside

We at Pet Shield highly recommend not leaving your pet outside for extended amounts of time, but if you have no choice but to leave them out for an hour or two, make sure they have a dry, roomy shelter out of the wind. To keep your pet safe, the shelter’s floor should be raised a few inches off the ground, and the floor should be covered with straw of another soft covering. Make sure they have plenty of food and that their water hasn’t frozen over, and remember, try not to leave them out for too long.

Winter Dress

We don’t recommend dressing up your pets for fun, but smaller, short-haired dogs can benefit from a little extra covering when the air is chilled. Just make sure to leave their head bare. If it’s so cold that you feel you should be covering their head, it’s probably best to not spend much time outside.

Know the Warning Signs

If your pet starts experiencing these symptoms, get them inside, and considering contacting your vet:

  • Whining, acting anxious
  • Constant shivering
  • Snow or ice on their hair or body
  • Slow movement, little to no movement
  • Looking for places to burrow

These can be signs of severe chills and/or hypothermia. Wrap your pet up in blanket to keep them warm once you get them safely to shelter, then reach out to your vet for further instruction. Sometimes, frostbite symptoms take a bit longer to appear, so make sure to keep an eye on your pet throughout the week to notice anything unusual. Keep an eye out for any painful or pale areas.

Pet Shield is Here!

Make sure your pet remains protected throughout the harshest season of the year, and always. Get a free quote today to discover how easy and inexpensive it can be to provide coverage for your best friend!
