Apartment Dwellers

It's a lifechanging decision... in the best way!

It’s National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day! There are so many great reasons to adopt a shelter pet:

  1. You save a life!
  2. Most shelter pets are there because of situations like a move or divorce, not because the animals did anything wrong. Many shelter pets are also house-trained and used to living with families, which means you can find a great fitting shelter pet for your home!
  3.  You can save money. Usually when you adopt a shelter pet, the cost of spaying/neutering, first vaccinations, and sometimes even microchipping, are included in the adoption price.
  4.  You can help fight puppy mills and other pet breeding facilities that are made for profit and don’t treat their animals properly.

Khaleesi is a muted calico cat and a previous shelter pet who was adopted from the Lloydminster SPCA in 2017. She has won over the hearts of her family since day one. Her owner vividly remembers her visit to the SPCA that day…

“My sister and I started renting an apartment together, and planned to adopt a new kitten. She wasn’t able to make it to the SPCA on adoption day, so it was up to me to choose who’d be coming home. I spent nearly an hour wandering around. I nearly had my heart set on two different kitties (who I hope ended up going to wonderful homes) before I came across a sweet, sleeping kitten, and something just clicked. It felt right. I was reassured by my feeling once I read her bio.”

Khaleesi’s bio:

I’m a boss lady’s right hand lady. We don’t let anyone push us around. I love to play with toys and run at full speed, and climb, so I should let you know a scratching post would be a great asset for the times I want to climb something. I love adventure and I would love a home that will keep me busy and then snuggle with me when I’m ready for a snuggly nap. Come visit me today!

Adopting a pet is such a big decision that didn’t lessen once her owner was at the SPCA. “It’s a little tough as you’re about to leave. I knew I wanted  to choose her, but I couldn’t help but think of all the kittens I was leaving behind. I was tempted to get more than one, but I knew that wasn’t a responsible decision to make in the moment.”

The drive from Lloydminster to Edmonton wasn’t ideal for either of them. Khaleesi was, of course, nervous about the trip. She started to meow, and kept meowing until they arrived at their new home. “I knew she’d be a little skittish, so I just gave her space once we arrived. I wanted her to feel comfortable, and that she still had some control. I stayed near her, but let her do her own thing and get used to the space. It wasn’t long before she showed her bravery and hopped on the couch next to me to ask for cuddles!”

Since day one, Khaleesi the shelter pet has been the bright light of the household. She delights guests, and is always down for a cuddle.

“She’s the sweetest, very low maintenance, but definitely needs that cuddle time. While I’m watching TV or reading on the couch, she loves to rest her head on my shoulder and have her cheek touch my cheek. It’s adorable, even when it’s a little clingy. When I’m feeling anxious, she helps calm me down. I’ve struggled with my anxiety for years, and adopting Khaleesi has really helped me!”

Dolce and Gabanna

We at Pet Shield are obsessed with protecting your pets, because we know just how special they are. We thought it’d be fun to show them off on our website! We’ll be sharing some of our favourite “pet profiles” we receive. This week’s picks are none other than Dolce and Gabanna!

Names: Dolce McDonald & Gabanna Cole (though their dog parents are now married, their owners say they haven’t gotten around to changing Gabanna’s last name yet).

Breed: Miniature Pinscher

This brother and sister were born in 2007. “My husband chose Dolce because he immediately took a little nap in his arms when he picked him up. I chose Gabbana because she was the runt of the litter. We decided to get 2 at the same time so they would have each other during the day while we were at work.”

Unlike most other dogs, these two absolutely hate car rides. When their owners go on vacation, they get to stay home and have puppy sitters come live with them.

Dolce has had a few surgeries over the years and has a thyroid issue. He is now pretty much blind and going deaf. Gabanna has had zero issues, and still gets the zoomies. Her family always jokes that she will outlive us all.

Dolce and Gabanna are typical siblings who will snuggle and cuddle each other one moment, and are a tad grumpy with each other the next. Gabanna must sleep completely under blankets. Dolce, not so much.

They love “toothbrushes” (their owner’s code word for “Greenies” treats), and their favourite song is Dolce & Gabanna (in the tune of Copacabana). His name is Dolce, hers is Gabanna.
